As promised...

Here are some pics from the cheap amazon underwater camera. These are taken at John Brewers beach in St Thomas and on a cruise ship shore excursion (kayaking & snorkelling) in St Kitts.

Two days at sea

Flights - in tubes, by zip line and in the theatre

Ending our cruise with two nights at sea and lots of ship activities. All three sea days we played board games (Parade, Finca) with Bob & Em, with a variety of winners.

Yesterday’s Galley tour was interesting; they have a great dough rolling machine and I learned they make about 1000 cookies each day - that’s about half of how many I make for Christmas😀

We played mini-golf and watched Phil on the Flow-rider this morning.

And here’s Steve flying on the zip and climbing up to the Abyss (dry tube slide).

Last night we saw the theatre production of Flight

We’ve had a great time with out table mates on the inaugural year of this ship.

Last night!

St Kitts

Kayaking and snorkeling

I’d signed up for the Nature kayaking and snorkelling shore excursion. We are usually too frugal to pay the cruise line for something we can organize on our own or buy cheaper at the pier, but since I was by myself, I was more comfortable with the cruise’s offering.

So I boarded the bus for the short, commentated ride to the first beach where we picked up the kayaks.

From the bus window.

I paired up with Nish, a young Brit (adult, but young compared to me). After donning life vests that said they were only appropriate for snorkelling and should not be used as floatation devices😀, we kayaked a short way to another beach. This was the location for snorkelling and we saw turtles and colourful fish. Then, kayaked a longer distance to a beach where they set up a ‘picnic’ of water and fresh fruit. No bathroom facilities. From there, the bus took us back to the ship.

That was only my second time kayaking, but Nish was more experienced and we didn’t tip (unlike my first time) and we were reasonably efficient. Good exercise and fun to be out on the water. Having burned myself the previous day in St Thomas, I wore spandex shorts past my knees and a t-shirt to protect my back. So no worse.

As previously arranged I met Steve in the Cheers bar and then we bought him some loud shirts. This pic shows the shirt, not the bar 😀

St. Thomas, USVI

After breakfast, we met up with Helen & Phil to pick up the rental car and drive to John Brewers beach. A bit of a rocky start - since St Thomas is an hour ahead, we were late in arriving to pick up the car as I booked the car based on ship time. They had, as a result, sent the car to be sold. Seems a bit of an extreme response 🙂 but that’s what the Budget employee told us. After much calling around, she found us a car and we were off - oops other side of the road.

Based on my prior research Brewer’s beach is popular with the locals, a quiet beach with bathroom facilities, a food truck, lots of shade, lots of sandy beach, and good snorkelling. It did not disappoint in any way. I swam for more than 1/2 hour with a turtle, watching it graze and come up for air. Fantastic. And I have a sunburn and some great (I hope great) pictures of the turtle and a couple of stingrays. I tried out the cheap amazon underwater camera and I’ll add photos when we get back home and can upload them.

In the meantime, here are some beach and USVI picks.

Arriving in St Thomas
Iguana at the pier
John Brewers beach
Phil and I getting ready to snorkel

And a few of the ship:
Steve with hair!
A tight rope walker
Our pet dog
And the best jogging track at sea

Happily for me, the loud Hiro show has been cancelled due to technical problems - our friend are accusing us of sabotage 😀 - so we’ll be able to sleep tonight.
